My Mastery Mentors
1. George Benson

Mentoring from George has come primarily from my spending time with him…from concerts to back stage visits and jam sessions, to sharing meals, phone visits, and special family times at his home.
I've listed a few of the valuable gems I’ve discovered from my times with my friend and brother, GB:
- Instill in people a reputation to live up to!
- If you want to be the best, you've got to study the best!
- Always focus on the outstanding qualities in people and make a point to commend them for it.
- Commendation shows love, it increases someone's self-worth, and enhances humble confidence.
- Work to be your very best, yet always remain humble! George has had global music success, and yet it has been his humility that has carried him to the moon and back!
- Always be hospitable and generous, honor and treat people like royalty!
- Give people the gift of opportunities to experience “the very best.”
Example: After I composed a song inspired by the Benson Family’s theme: “Nothin’ But Love,” I surprised the family by singing my newly composed song, “Nothin’ But Love." We were poolside at their home, and I didn’t have my guitar with me that night, so I asked George if he had a guitar handy.
Five minutes later he returned with his finest handmade classical guitar, and placed it in my arms. Knowing that instrument was one of his very best made me feel the depth of his loving kindness and generosity!

One night after one of George's concerts in Temecula, California, my wife and I invited him and his son to join us at the winery where I worked a few miles away. We picked up some tacos and enjoyed them with a little wine in the private tasting room.
Next, I grabbed my guitar as I'd played a gig earlier that day. George and I took turns playing songs while handing the guitar back and forth.
As we were wrapping up our evening together, George leaned in, smiled and spoke into me, “Joel, you are a great artist!”
Time stood still for a golden moment as his kind commendation sank into my mind and heart. George's authority made me believe it.
Remember how the Cowardly Lion sought courage to be brave. He and his companions traveled to the Emerald City to ask the Wizard for these qualities, only to learn they possessed them all along. And so with me, I had the gift all along, I just hadn't embraced it.
I felt the Master's stamp of approval. His sincere commendation inspired me and increased my confidence in my abilities and potential. Coming from GB, I believed it heart, soul, mind and strength. I continue to grow and reach for greater mastery as an artist! And like my mentor, I seek to commend and build others up in the power of love.
Valuable Gems I've discovered during George's Concert Performances
- Make people feel your love, joy, passion and gratitude as you engage them, and they will respond.
- George never asks his audience to get up and dance or clap, they just do!
- Gratefully acknowledge your audience, your band and crew, and the composers of the songs your perform.

I have proudly represented Ovation Instruments since 1985.
The first guitar player I noticed as a three year old boy was Glen Campbell. Next I heard my mom's Chet Atkins records and thus began my love for the instrument.
Hit songwriter, Darrell Staedtler gave me his chord instruction book and some great advice that helped me jump in and begin playing the guitar at age thirteen. He asked me if I could count to 8. After I replied, "Yes," he stated, "then playing guitar will be easy because there are only 8 notes in the scale!" Darrell planted a positive seed in my mind and I quickly learned a handful of chords.
The next year my Dad signed me up for classical guitar lessons. I began performing professionally in a pizza parlor at age 15.
My most memorable guitar lesson was with legendary jazz guitarist, Barney Kessel when I was seventeen. He had an amazing gift for teaching and offered a model of discipline and balance in life.
Over the years I've met and worked with a lot of great guitarists including Benny Garcia, Edgar Cruz, Roy Clark, Steve Wariner, Jerry Swallow, Jeff Dayton, Glen Campbell and George Benson.
Ancient King David of Israel was asked to play the harp for King Saul to soothe his troubled soul. Music has proven power and is an amazing gift. Play music for the love of it, strive to become better and always play from the heart!
Happy Pickin' Joel
